Lung Disease (Chronic Obstructive pulmonary Disease)

It is a lung disease associated with some kind of obstruction to the passage and exchange of gases in the lungs. The disease is characterized by poor inflow of air and difficulty in breathing, coupled with cough and sputum.

Another disease of the lungs under COPD is Emphysema. This condition is progressive and there is no known cure for it. The emphysema patient cannot breathe due to destruction of alveoli in the lungs. Smoking is one of the important causes of destruction of these fragile membranes of the alveoli. But not all smokers suffer from emphysema. It again seems like an auto immune disease. The smokers who suffer lack a protein called alpha1-antitrypsin (AAT).

There is no known cure for this condition, however, stem cell therapy offers an opportunity to treat the condition by controlling inflammation of the lung tissue and also promote lung healing. The growth factors and cytokines help regeneration of alveolar cells.
