Spinal Cord Injury
Most spinal cord injuries are due to car or motor bike accidents, falls, act of violence, or sport injuries causing trauma to the vertebral column due to certain diseases. A spinal cord injury often causes permanent loss of strength, sensation and function below the site of the injury. There is no permanent cure for this injury except rehabilitation with support, physiotherapy or learn to live with it.
The effect of spinal cord injury depends on the location and the extent of damage to the spinal cord. The spinal cord can be divided into following
- Injury to any of the 7 Cervical vertebrae– Quadriplegia (Paralysis of all four limbs)
- Injury to any of the 12 Thoracic vertebrae–Paraplegia
- Injury to any of the 5 lumbar vertebrae —
- Injury to any of the fused sacral vertebrae–
Injury to lumbar and sacral region results in loss of movement of legs, loss of bowel and bladder control and sexual dysfunction.
